South Brisbane is one of Brisbane’s most vibrant and historically rich precincts, just across the river from the CBD, blending culture, recreation, and heritage into one exciting area. Once a bustling industrial and wharf area in the 19th and early 20th centuries, South Brisbane has transformed a lot over the decades. However, many clues to its past can still be found along the South Brisbane Heritage Trail, which runs from the old South Brisbane Dry Dock, built in the 1870s, to the historic South Brisbane Railway Station, dating back to 1891.
Today, South Brisbane is perhaps best known for the world-famous South Bank Parklands, a sprawling riverside oasis that was once the site of World Expo 88, drawing millions of visitors from around the globe. Opened as public parkland in 1992, this lush destination features the iconic Streets Beach, which is a unique man-made inner-city beach, as well as peaceful picnic lawns, riverfront paths, and community markets that bring the area buzzing year-round.
