Termites are known to be incredibly small and are often confused with your regular household ant. Termites can be difficult to find due to their covert nature, so searching for signs of termite damage may be a more reliable indicator of termite presence. One of Allure Pest Solutions Northside customers based in Zillmere raised these concerns with us, so we are sharing in the event it will help you to identify any possible signs of termites around your home:
- Difficulty opening and closing doors: This Zillmere homeowner expressed the fact that her laundry and bathroom doors were somewhat difficult to open and close. Termites often chew away at pieces of timber, commonly found in doors and surrounding panels. Termite excrement often forms as mud and creates an environment where heat and moisture often get trapped. This leads to swells in timber panels, causing doors to jam or to no longer fit their grooves.
- Hollow and “papery” sounds from timber walls: If ever you’ve knocked on the side of a water tank and noted the differences in pitch and timbre from when you would tap the hollow sections versus the sections filled with water, you would know what is meant here. A termite feasting away at the interior of your wooden walls would cause structural weakness in the wall and once tapped, would cause a “hollower” sound or even “papery” feel due to the wood loss.
- Termite tunnels The Zillmere homeowner reported of “mud” tunnels at the rear of her home, along walls and edges of skirting panels. Termites are intelligent and to shield themselves from unwanted guests or the elements, they construct walls made of mud to protect their thoroughfares.
